Who is Rosalee?

She is the puppy in the Terry Lowey‘s Children‘s Stories series. Rosalee is a Bloodhound. As an adult hound, she can weigh between 90 and 135 pounds. A dog that size can clear off a coffee table with one happy sweep of her tail!

Rosalee is a scent hound. Therefore, she is a dog attached to a big nose! If she catches a scent she will follow it regardless of calls to stop or of dangerous traffic. With her nose to the ground and her loose skin drooping over her eyes, she isn‘t aware of her surroundings while in pursuit of who she smells. This degree of focus is good for search and rescue work, but as a pet, a Bloodhound can present a challenge to obedience train. When a Bloodhound is trained as a working dog for police searches or rescue work, she is always worked in a harness on a long lead.

Rosalee is generally at risk off a leash. For a safe contained environment while she is outside at home a fenced yard is essential.

As most Bloodhounds, Rosalee is very curious, social and needs a lot of exercise. She loves attention and needs to be included in family activities. Otherwise, without enough attention and love, through frustration and boredom, Rosalee can raise havoc on home and garden! Having a lonely Bloodhound is not a good thing! She thrives as a live-in companion, however, this adds a new dimension to house cleaning! A Bloodhound drools and when she shakes her head, slobbers can embellish everything; walls, furniture, your clothing, and even ceilings! Smart Bloodhound owners have handy wiping towels for their hound‘s lips (loogie rags) strategically located throughout their homes. Also, they are often busy spot-cleaning walls and furniture at least once a week.

A Bloodhound requires a lot of patience and responds best to positive reinforcement training. Generally, a Bloodhound is considered a docile breed, but as with any being, temperaments and personalities vary.
